New Boiler Installation - South London

This job was in a private house in South London. The customer needed
their old Worcester boiler replaced with a newer, more powerful model
- also Worcester. Straightforward on paper, but there were a few
challenges that needed careful planning on site.

First off, the space was very tight. The old setup didn't have any
filters on the system - no magnetic filter for the heating circuit, no
water filter - which are now standard for a proper install. There also
wasn't much room to fit them in alongside the new boiler, especially
with a washing machine directly below.

On top of that, the flue on the original boiler had been installed
poorly. It wasn't in line with current regs, and the position needed
correcting before the new boiler could be signed off and certified.

The heating season had already started, so the job needed turning around
quickly - no long downtime.

What I did?
First, I fully drained and flushed the heating system, which was in poor
condition - old pipework and a fair bit of sludge built up over the
years. Before installing the new boiler, I made sure the system was
properly cleaned and treated to give it a fresh start.

One radiator upstairs was particularly bad - barely any flow. I pulled
it off, gave it a proper clean, and got it running as it should. After
that, I went round and balanced the whole system to make sure everything
was heating evenly.

Then came the boiler itself. Once the old one was out, I prepped the
pipework for the new layout. I used compact, high-quality filters from
Spirotech, cleaner from Fernox and limescale from Scalemaster, which
were ideal for the tight space. The install was done cleanly and in line
with Worcester's specs, with proper isolation valves and filter access
for future servicing.

The flue had to be repositioned. The old one wasn't installed correctly
and wouldn't pass inspection, so I adjusted the route, fitted a new
Worcester flue kit, and sealed everything up properly.

Once everything was in place, I filled the system, bled it out, checked
for leaks, and got everything fired up, commissioned and running
smoothly.

Materials used:
  • Worcester Bosch combi boiler (latest model)
  • Spirotech, Fernox and Scalemaster filters
  • Worcester flue kit (repositioned and reinstalled)
  • Full system flush and water treatment
  • Radiator cleaned and system balanced
  • Quality fittings, isolation valves, and controls

Outcome:
  • Old boiler replaced with a modern, efficient system
  • System fully cleaned and protected with new filters
  • Flue installation brought up to spec
  • Problem radiator fixed and heating balanced across the house
  • All done in just a few days with minimal disruption

The customer was happy to have everything up and running again before
the cold set in, and knowing the system was properly cleaned and
balanced made a big difference.
